The establishment of an Athletes’ Commission is mandatory for several reasons:
REPRESENTATION:
It ensures that athletes are well represented at all levels of the sports movement, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Sports Federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and National Federations (NFs).
Support:
It offers practical support to athletes throughout their journey in sport, on and off the field.
VOICE:
It allows athletes’ voices to be heard, and their experiences to be used to improve sport.
Decision-Making:
It informs an organization’s decision-making process and provides a platform for discussion and research related to new ideas and issues.
Governance:
It strengthens good governance and helps safeguard the credibility of sport and the Olympic Movement.
Equality:
The Athletes’s Commission is a model of athlete involvement that is replicated across a wide variety of Olympic Movement stakeholders, ensuring that athletes’ perspectives are considered in all aspects of the movement.
